Early fall is one of my favorite times of the year. The anticipation for a new season is palpable. Our routines collectively begin to shift as school starts back up, vacation season winds down, and the days get shorter. September is for fresh starts, so why not start at home?

A new season always inspires me to give my home a little refresh, and the good news is you can do it on a budget. There are plenty of ways to bring fall into your home without buying an entirely new look—and the following are timeless updates you can come back to year after year. Here are a few early-fall decor ideas to make your home feel new again.

Focus on Layers

If summer is for lightening up, fall is for adding more. Start layering throughout your home—toss a throw onto the sofa (or several), layer rugs on top of one another, and play with different prints and textures. It’s cozy season, so opt for materials that feel soft and substantial: faux fur, high-quality leather, velvet. Have fun mixing them and see which combinations you love most.

A summer color palette is light and airy; fall calls for colors that feel grounded and warm. Mother Nature is always the muse, so take inspiration from what’s already emerging outside. Try adding pops of red, mustard, brown, and deep green—as simple as a few accent pillows or small decorative pieces. If you’re feeling bold, play with paint, or invest in a larger piece of furniture in a deep color.

My world changed when I learned about updating art seasonally. It makes total sense—if you’re already swapping out other home items for fall, why not your art, too? If your walls lean coastal, light, or bright, consider layering in a few pieces with deeper tones, instead. Your walls are an important part of your home, so make sure you’re hanging pieces you genuinely love looking at every day.

Give yourself permission to reach for deep shades of navy, maroon, or even black. You don’t need to color-drench an entire room (though, that would be a vibe)—try moody bedding, accents, or a single furniture piece instead. Darker shades can feel daunting at first, but trust your instincts and give it a try.

Summer calls for a fruit bowl; fall calls for something heartier. Take a large wooden bowl, place it at the center of your table or kitchen island, and fill it with seasonal produce—kale, sweet potatoes, squash. For more color, mix in fruit, too: apples, pears, and cranberries make a beautiful assortment.

You can change the entire feel of a bedroom just by refreshing the bedding. Layering is everything for a cozy bed, especially in fall. Start with a quality set of sheets I personally love bamboo sheets for how soft and breathable they feel. Add a plush duvet with a cover in a rich fall color (a warm taupe is a favorite, or a fun print like stripes or gingham). Then layer in a throw for texture and warmth—chunky knit, faux fur, or wool all work beautifully. Finish with a few decorative Euro shams in front of your sleeping pillows for another chance to play with color and pattern.

Nothing says fall quite like a sheepskin or a faux-fur throw. Use a sheepskin as a rug (even better layered over another one), or drape one over a bench or chair. A faux fur throw works the same way—beautiful at the end of a bed or draped over a sofa. Both add texture that’s easy to miss during warmer months, and they feel incredible against your skin.

You can (and should) light candles year-round, but they feel especially cozy in fall. Whether you go scentless in a hurricane vase or reach for something autumnal, lean into the coziness. I always keep a candle in our entryway, and lighting a cinnamon-scented one each September is one of my favorite small traditions; the first lit fall candle of the season is worth celebrating in my house. As the days shorten, scentless candles around sunset make for the coziest glow.

Sometimes all a seasonal switch needs is a new layout. Try rearranging your furniture, especially if you’ve never done it before. Move your bed to a new wall, rework your living room, or shift your home office desk to a fresh spot. No need to buy anything. My husband and I recently moved our bed, and the whole room feels brand new—it’s fun to experiment!

Get Cozy With Velvet

Cozy textures are having a moment in fall, and velvet deserves a special mention. It packs a subtle punch and instantly elevates a space. A few velvet accent pillows on your sofa or bed go a long way —try burgundy or forest green, and stick to a cohesive palette. They look striking against a neutral base and are easy to swap out as the seasons continue to shift.
